What to do if You Suspect Identity Theft

What should I do if I feel that I have been a victim of identity theft?

• Report identity (ID) theft to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at identitytheft.gov (Opens in a new Window) or by phone at 1-877-438-4338.
• Contact and notify the companies where you know the fraud occurred.
• Place a free, one-year fraud alert by contacting one of three credit bureaus (they must tell the other two of your alert):
  • Equifax (Opens in a new Window)
  • Experian (Opens in a new Window)
  • Transunion (Opens in a new Window)
• Ask for your free credit report to review all fraud impacts. Consider “freezing” your credit to prevent further impact.
